Dar il-Kantuniera

A Therapeutic Facility for Mental Health in Gozo

Community mental health at ‘Dar Il-Kantuniera’ endeavours to offer a specialised sheltered environment for persons undergoing a therapeutic programme for mental illness and who do not require in-patient hospitalisation, but need an intermediate degree of care before returning to independent community living. Dar il-Kantuniera also offers respite accommodation for service users who live at home with their families and/or formal caregivers. Respite allows formal caregivers to have a temporary break and take the time to recover from the stresses of care giving duties and responsibilities and gives them the flexibility to take care of other important aspects of their lives. This is a project of The Malta Trust Foundation in collaboration with the Mental Health Association Gozo and the Ministry for Gozo.
Inaugurated in October 2021, Dar il- Kantuniera in Gharb, Gozo, is a home offering services in the field of mental health to individuals who are 18 years and over and residing in Gozo. The core goal of this community-based sheltered accommodation treatment model is to ensure a holistic, person-centred approach to the treatment and care of persons with mental health challenges, individually and in groups, in a “home away from home” environment. The intensity of essential care varies according to the nature and complexity of the difficulties experienced by the individual. Dar il- Kantuniera also offers respite accommodation for service-users who live at home with their families and/or formal care-givers.
Respite allows formal caregivers to have a temporary break and take the time to recover from the stresses of care giving duties and responsibilities and gives them the flexibility to take care of other important aspects of their lives. Dar il-Kantuniera is open for individuals aged eighteen (18) and over, as well as live on the island on Gozo. For a potential resident to be referred to Dar il-Kantuniera, one would need to have a referral form completed by the Psychiatrists through Gozo General Hospital.
The main aim of Dar il-Kantuniera is to offer a temporary residence for a few weeks where through individualized rehabilitation and in groups, individuals are supported and empowered to go back to their daily lives within their community with the dignified support and integrity that they deserve. Whether they are coming from a stay at the hospital or coming from the community for rehabilitation, Dar il-Kantuniera provides a traditional Maltese home environment and works on several different skills, such as budgeting, time management, communication, and others, together with daily tasks, such as cleaning, laundry, general hygiene, and others.
