About Dar il-Kantuniera

Dar il-Kantuniera is a community-based social support initiative in the field of mental wellbeing.

It provides a safe, supportive, and home-like environment for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, who may require additional support before returning to independent living within their family and community.

The project adopts a psychosocial and rehabilitation-oriented approach rather than a clinical or institutional model, with a strong emphasis on inclusion, dignity, empowerment, independent living, and community integration.

The service is designed to support individuals in strengthening everyday life skills, rebuilding confidence, improving social functioning, and maintaining meaningful connections within their community and family environment.

Support and
Rehabilitation

  • The residence offers community-based support services.
  • The residence also provides respite accommodation for individuals living with their families or formal caregivers.
  • It provides temporary accommodation and structured support for persons who may require an intermediate level of care and rehabilitation, either following a hospital stay or while living within the community.
  • This offers caregivers temporary relief while ensuring continuity of support for their loved ones.
  • The primary aim is to support individuals through personalised rehabilitation programmes that encourage autonomy, social participation, emotional wellbeing, and successful reintegration into everyday community life.
  • Admission is based on referral through mental health professionals and coordinated in collaboration with relevant services operating through Gozo General Hospital.
  • Support is delivered both individually and in group settings within a traditional Maltese home environment that promotes comfort, stability, and belonging.

Impact and Outcomes

Dar il-Kantuniera aims to strengthen the ability of individuals to return to community living with greater confidence, stability, and independence.

It aims to reduce unnecessary hospital admissions wherever possible.

Experience from the programme has demonstrated positive outcomes in the development of life skills, improved wellbeing, stronger coping mechanisms, and enhanced social participation among residents.

The project continues to support individuals and families through a holistic, person-centred, and community-focused model that prioritises dignity, inclusion, and sustainable recovery.

A safe, supportive, and home-like environment.
