The Budding Project

Background

In 2018 The Malta Trust Foundation was approached by the University Students Council, requesting the Foundation’s support to assist with training in Mental Health First Aid, following a national consultation with Young People on Mental Health and Youth. One of the outcomes reported that more than half of the youth consulted were not aware of training opportunities in Mental Health Education. The National Youth Council therefore recommended a wider dissemination of this training within the tertiary student cohort. “Mental Health and behavioural problems are reported to be the primary drivers of disability worldwide, causing over 40 million years of disability in 20 to 29 year olds”. ( KNZ policy paper- “ A Holistic Approach Towards Mental Health and Youth” 2018) The consultation concluded that 49 percent of respondents were never taught Mental Health at school and 12 percent only indicated that they had some kind of mental Health Education at school.

With Mental Health being one of the core values of The Malta Trust Foundation, the Foundation has invested in training in mental health first aid aimed for young people with the support of Richmond Foundation, the National Youth Council, The University Students Council and the student councils of the Malta College of Arts, Institute for Tourism Studies and Giovanni Curmi Higher Secondary School.

Aims and Objectives
